Connected unattended retail

Vending Machine SIM Cards

Link vending machines to payments, stock telemetry, temperature alerts and remote maintenance from one managed SIM estate.

In brief

A vending machine SIM can connect the payment terminal, telemetry controller or an on-site gateway. The design should account for small routine messages, occasional software downloads, refrigeration or sensor alerts and the payment provider's network rules.

What you can connect

  • Cashless payment terminals
  • Stock and sales telemetry
  • Temperature and fault monitoring
  • Remote pricing and software updates

Connectivity is only one part of reliability

Metal cabinets and indoor placement can weaken signal at the modem.

Payment and machine telemetry may have different owners and security requirements.

A single machine fault can cause repeated retries and abnormal data use.

Technical planning

Design the complete connection

Architecture

A vending estate may contain a payment terminal, machine controller and refrigeration or stock sensors. These can share a gateway only when the interfaces, payment approval and security boundaries allow it. Metal cabinets often require careful modem placement or an external antenna.

Data and power sizing

Count sales, stock, temperature and heartbeat messages, then add remote diagnostics, price files, payment traffic and firmware. Model fault storms: a failing peripheral can retry continuously and consume far more than a healthy machine. Separate thresholds by machine class and software version.

Solution design

What we qualify before recommending a SIM

Coverage maps and headline data allowances are a starting point. A production design needs the device, traffic, locations and operating model.

  1. Payment terminal and telemetry architecture
  2. Placement, antenna and representative-site signal tests
  3. Normal messages, update files and retry behaviour
  4. Acquirer, APN and addressing requirements
  5. Remote activation and usage anomaly alerts
  6. Field replacement and support responsibility

Multi-provider by design

Choose Onomondo, Telnyx or another fit

Telnyx's payment-oriented capabilities and traffic controls may suit cashless vending estates. Onomondo's non-steered networks and diagnostics can suit widely distributed machines where avoiding site visits matters. iSIM confirms whether one modem or separate payment and telemetry paths are appropriate.

Telnyx payment-oriented controls can suit cashless estates with explicit destination policy. Onomondo diagnostics and multi-network access can suit widely distributed machines where site visits are costly. iSIM confirms whether payments and telemetry should use one path or remain operationally separate.

Availability note: networks, radio technologies, IP features, regions and platform controls vary by provider, country and plan. We verify the proposed configuration during the pilot.

What the pilot should prove

  • Test several cabinet types with doors closed and refrigeration running.
  • Validate payment approval and telemetry ownership separately.
  • Simulate a peripheral fault and observe retry/data behaviour.
  • Exercise remote suspension, replacement and decommissioning steps.

Document the approved profile, alerts, ownership and rollout or rollback process.

Frequently asked questions

Can one SIM handle payment and telemetry?

Sometimes. It depends on terminal approvals, interfaces and security boundaries. Some machines use a payment terminal with its own connectivity and a separate controller.

How much data does a vending machine use?

Routine stock and health messages can be small, while software, media or repeated retries add more. Measure the complete machine workflow.

Will the SIM work inside a metal machine?

Possibly, but the enclosure can attenuate signal. Antenna position and a live site test are important.

Can a vending SIM roam between networks?

Multi-network services may access more than one network, subject to coverage, agreements, device support and selection behaviour.

Can I suspend a machine remotely?

SIM lifecycle controls can suspend connectivity, but machine and payment operations should have an agreed process before doing so.
