Tablets, routers and mobile hotspots

Business Data SIM Cards

Manage business tablets, field routers and portable hotspots without losing visibility across individual consumer accounts.

In brief

A business data SIM provides mobile internet to a tablet, router or hotspot and can be managed as part of a fleet. Unlike low-data telemetry, these devices may consume substantial data through video meetings, cloud sync, operating-system updates and user activity.

What you can connect

  • Field-service tablets and iPads
  • 4G/5G routers and temporary sites
  • Portable hotspots for mobile teams
  • Backup internet for branches and equipment

Connectivity is only one part of reliability

Human-operated devices have less predictable usage than fixed-purpose IoT endpoints.

Router and device band support determines which networks and technologies are usable.

A low-cost telemetry plan may be commercially or technically unsuitable for general internet access.

Technical planning

Design the complete connection

Architecture

Tablets, routers and hotspots create general internet traffic rather than predictable machine telemetry. Endpoint management, device encryption, DNS or content controls and user offboarding sit alongside the cellular service. Branch failover also needs dual-WAN health checks and a tested return to the primary link.

Data and power sizing

Use application behaviour, not user count alone: video meetings, cloud sync, operating-system updates and tethering can dominate. Measure median and peak monthly use, simultaneous users and failover duration. Confirm pooling, throttling, acceptable-use and hotspot terms before quoting a fleet plan.

Solution design

What we qualify before recommending a SIM

Coverage maps and headline data allowances are a starting point. A production design needs the device, traffic, locations and operating model.

  1. Device make/model, SIM lock and supported bands
  2. Expected applications, users and monthly volume
  3. Single-device versus shared/pooling needs
  4. Content controls, alerts and acceptable-use constraints
  5. Primary, portable or failover role
  6. Support, replacement and offboarding process

Multi-provider by design

Choose Onomondo, Telnyx or another fit

Telnyx can be relevant for API-managed routers and controlled network access. Onomondo is primarily positioned for IoT fleets and can fit dedicated-purpose gateways; general human internet use and high-volume plans need commercial confirmation. iSIM matches the product to the workload instead of labelling every data device IoT.

This workload is the clearest product-fit risk in the cluster. Telnyx may fit API-managed routers or controlled data paths. Onomondo is positioned for IoT and dedicated-purpose gateways; high-volume or human browsing requires explicit commercial confirmation. iSIM will propose another service if neither is suitable.

Availability note: networks, radio technologies, IP features, regions and platform controls vary by provider, country and plan. We verify the proposed configuration during the pilot.

What the pilot should prove

  • Inventory unlocked devices, modem bands and intended applications.
  • Measure a normal workday plus operating-system updates.
  • Test NBN failover, session recovery and return-to-primary.
  • Confirm pooling, hotspot, voice/SMS and acceptable-use terms in writing.

03

Scale

Document the approved profile, alerts, ownership and rollout or rollback process.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a data SIM and an IoT SIM?

Both provide mobile data. IoT services usually emphasise device lifecycle, APIs, policies, diagnostics and distributed fleets; business data services may better suit human-operated, higher-volume devices.

Can I put the SIM in any tablet or router?

The device must be unlocked, accept the SIM format and support the relevant modem bands, APN and network technology.

Can data be pooled across devices?

Some services support shared or pooled structures; others charge per SIM and actual use. We confirm the selected commercial model.

Can a router fail over automatically from NBN?

Yes, with compatible dual-WAN hardware and configuration. Test health detection, session recovery and return-to-primary behaviour.

Are voice calls included?

Not necessarily. Many data and IoT services are data-only or have limited SMS/voice capability. Requirements must be stated before selection.
