Connected screens and displays

Digital Signage SIM Cards

Update menu boards, retail screens, kiosks and outdoor displays without depending on each site's local Wi-Fi.

In brief

A digital signage SIM connects the media player or cellular router behind a screen. It supports scheduled content downloads, health checks and remote administration; data demand is driven by asset sizes and refresh frequency rather than the number of screens alone.

What you can connect

  • Retail promotions and price boards
  • Restaurant and drive-through menus
  • Corporate and transport displays
  • Outdoor advertising and temporary events

Connectivity is only one part of reliability

Large video assets and repeated failed downloads can drive unexpected usage.

A blank screen is often a player, power or content issue – not only connectivity.

Remote administration needs a defined access method and secure device configuration.

Technical planning

Design the complete connection

Architecture

A media player or site router downloads scheduled assets, stores them locally and reports health to the signage platform. Screens should continue showing approved cached content when cellular service is unavailable. Remote administration should use the platform outbound path or a secured network design rather than an exposed player.

Data and power sizing

Add each new image, video and software package per player, multiplied by refresh frequency and sites, then include monitoring and retry allowance. Streaming is a different high-volume product. Staggered downloads, local caching and checksum-based retry prevent the same large asset being fetched repeatedly.

Solution design

What we qualify before recommending a SIM

Coverage maps and headline data allowances are a starting point. A production design needs the device, traffic, locations and operating model.

  1. Number of players and locations
  2. Content sizes, cadence and caching behaviour
  3. Router versus integrated modem design
  4. Remote access and management method
  5. Data alerts and download scheduling
  6. Signal survey for enclosed cabinets and outdoor sites

Multi-provider by design

Choose Onomondo, Telnyx or another fit

Both platforms can support distributed signage. Onomondo is attractive for multi-market estates and network diagnostics; Telnyx can fit API-controlled routers, traffic policies or static/public addressing. iSIM sizes service from actual content workflows and encourages local caching to limit repeat downloads.

Either platform can support distributed signage. Onomondo is attractive for multi-country estates and remote diagnostics; Telnyx can suit API-controlled routers, traffic policies or defined addressing. Commercial suitability must be checked against media volume rather than inferred from an IoT label.

Availability note: networks, radio technologies, IP features, regions and platform controls vary by provider, country and plan. We verify the proposed configuration during the pilot.

What the pilot should prove

  • Load a representative campaign and operating-system update.
  • Interrupt a download and confirm resumable or safe retry behaviour.
  • Verify offline playback and health-state reporting.
  • Measure cabinet signal, peak throughput and a full refresh cycle.
01

Discover

Confirm devices, sites, traffic, security, support and commercial constraints.

02

Pilot

Test representative hardware and locations, then measure attachment, usage and recovery.

03

Scale

Document the approved profile, alerts, ownership and rollout or rollback process.

Frequently asked questions

How much data does digital signage use?

Calculate the total size of new media downloaded per player, refresh frequency, software updates, monitoring traffic and a retry allowance. Streaming continuously uses substantially more.

Can one SIM connect several screens?

Yes, if several players share a cellular router and the LAN design supports it. Capacity, failure impact and site layout should be considered.

Is cellular better than venue Wi-Fi?

Cellular can give the signage operator independent control and consistent configuration. The best option depends on site coverage, volume and resilience needs.

Can screens keep playing if mobile coverage drops?

A properly configured player caches approved content locally. Cellular reconnects for updates and monitoring; offline playback is a player-platform function.

Do I need a public IP?

Usually not for cloud-managed players using outbound connections. Direct remote access may require a secure addressing or VPN design.
